Seahorses Group
Supporting communication, problem-solving and discovery as children grow in confidence and prepare for school.
Three years to school age - Part of our Over 2's Ocean Unit

In Seahorses, we nurture independence, kindness, and a love of learning.
In our Seahorses room, children are encouraged to develop independence while building strong personal, social, and emotional skills. We support them in managing everyday tasks—such as pouring their own drinks, putting on coats, washing hands, and wiping noses—helping to foster confidence and self-care abilities in a nurturing environment.
Early Mathematics and Critical Thinking
Our approach to mathematics is hands-on and meaningful. Children are introduced to key concepts including numbers, shapes, patterns, measures, and spatial awareness. Through play and real-life experiences, they explore counting, link numbers with quantities, compare sizes, describe positions and routes, and begin to solve problems in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
Early Literacy and Communication
Recognising their names and engaging in mark-making activities are an important part of the day. These experiences lay the foundation for writing and drawing while supporting fine motor development. Songs, rhymes, storytelling, and counting games are part of our daily routine, enriching children’s communication and language skills.
Active Play and Physical Development
Our outdoor area offers exciting opportunities for climbing, balancing, and movement—helping children build their gross motor skills and develop a love for active play in a safe and stimulating environment.
All of our practitioners hold up-to-date Paediatric First Aid qualifications, ensuring your child’s health and safety is always a priority.
We maintain a practitioner-to-child ratio of 1:8, allowing for individual attention, strong relationships, and quality learning experiences for every child.

Supporting the Transition to School
Our Seahorses team, understand that moving on to primary school is a big step for both children and their families. That’s why we place a strong focus on making the transition to school smooth, positive, and confidence-building.
How We Support Your Child:
-
Building Independence -
We help children develop essential self-care skills, such as dressing themselves, using the toilet independently, and managing their belongings, so they feel confident and capable in a school environment.
-
Encouraging Social and Emotional Readiness -
Our daily routines support children in forming friendships, managing emotions, taking turns, and following simple instructions—key skills for a successful start in school.
-
Developing Early Learning Skills -
Through playful, age-appropriate activities, we support children’s early literacy, numeracy, and communication—laying strong foundations for Reception class learning.
-
Conversations About School -
We talk positively about “school,” read stories about starting school, and involve children in discussions to build excitement and reduce anxiety.
-
Sharing Information with Schools -
We prepare a detailed transition report for each child, sharing key information about their learning, interests, and individual needs. We also liaise directly with receiving schools to ensure a joined-up approach.
-
Working in Partnership with Parents -
We keep you informed every step of the way and are always here to answer questions, offer reassurance, and support you through this important milestone.
Starting school is a big adventure—and we’re here to make sure your child feels ready, secure, and excited for their school journey.
